Pop a Pill

Feeling a little stress at work? Take a Xanax.

Life's not perfect? Take a Zoloft.

Trouble sleeping? Take an Ambien.

Can't get it up? Take Viagra.

Marijuana may be illegal, but you have a wide variety of other recreational drugs to choose from. What's more, your health insurance will probably pay for them. We have become a nation of drug addicts.

These and other drugs are wonderful for those people who really need them. Some people suffer from debilitating depression because of chemical imbalances. Others have erectile dysfunction due to injury or disease. Still others have dangerously high cholesterol levels due to hereditary factors. By all means, these people should see their doctor and get help.

Rather than popping another pill, most of us need to accept a little personal responsibility and change our lifestyles. Proper exercise and nutrition would make most of us feel more cheerful, sleep better, and live longer. But, that's no fun. We would rather eat what we want and sit on our fat, lazy asses.

The pharmaceutical companies love it, of course. That's why you see TV ads for drugs which promise to cure everything from indigestion to bipolar disorder. And it's easier for the doctors to write a prescription to mask the symptons than to spend the time to determine the cause.

Just as it's illegal to advertise cigarettes over the airwaves, it should be illegal to advertise any prescription drug except in publications aimed at medical personnel. Furthermore, anti-depressants and other mind-altering drugs should only be prescribed by psychologists and others who specialize in treating mental disorders.

You know, it's ok to feel a little sad or anxious sometimes. It's ok to occasionally have a restless night. And, guys, we don't always have to perform like porn stars. It's called life.
